Transformers: Dark of the Moon Buzzing up a Storm-tvso

Everywhere you turn it seems Michael Bay’s latest practice in extreme suspense and special effects sex is the water cooler staple conversation piece. Even true critics and action movie experts are raving up the movie, calling it more of a spectacle than a movie. One person I spoke to just came from the theater and described a sort of action induced coma he was experiencing. I think the buzz is warranted for sure, but besides the obvious comments made about the movie’s action, and hints that this will be the last one of the series, how is the movie really doing?

The latest numbers are in after the fourth of July weekend, and it’s safe to say that Transformers: Dark of the Moon is experiencing a fair amount of financial success. In fact, as far as July fourth openings go, it was the best. I mean the best fourth of July opening of all time. That’s incredible when you think about all the movies that have opened on this weekend in the past, hoping to become that talked about summer blockbuster. The film that Dark of the Moon surpassed was the highly anticipated Spider-Man 2. These of course are based on North American numbers, but with $217 million made through Sunday, it’s also Paramount’s best international launch ever. Already it’s the third best global launch of all time, and it’s run is far from over.

The overseas numbers really tell the story of the power of visual effects and the built-in audience of a sequel. You may rhetorically ask the world, “why do they keep making the same movies and why do they keep making sequels of movies that were never even that amazing to begin with?” Well, those numbers are the answer.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is set to just simply continue to make money for the next few weeks, and for years to come. The cable channel FX has already acquired the TV rights to show the movie sometime in 2013 or 2014. FX has also recently picked up Super 8, The Hangover II, Green Lantern, Thor, and scores of other recently released movies. Don’t forget about DVD sales too. The movie’s star Shia LaBeouf has already hinted that that DVD will have tons of extras including a large number of deleted scenes. So expect there to be some more buzz when the DVD is released.
