What is Halloween? An explanation of Halloween

Halloween is a holiday that has been being celebrated for more than 2,000 years. It falls on October 31.

Traditional Halloween activities can include things like carving Jack-o-Lanterns, visiting haunted houses or corn mazes, attending costume parties or bonfires and even trick or treating for the kids. The Halloween tradition is believed to have been brought to the USA by Scottish and Irish immigrants back in the nineteenth century.

Jack-o-Lanterns

It is an old belief that ghouls, spirits and ghosts can be warded off by light. For this reason, hundreds of years ago people started carving pumpkins and putting a lit candle in them to keep the evil spirits away on All Hallows Eve.

Haunted Houses

While many people want nothing to do with evil spirits, there are still quite a few who relish the thought of being scared. It raises the adrenaline and gives you quite a rush. For this reason, haunted houses can be found all over the place. With all of the ghosts, goblins and ghouls running around on Halloween, this is the perfect night to visit one.

Corn Mazes

Halloween comes at the time of year that signifies the end of a harvest. In many ways, this holiday actually celebrates that. Corn mazes are a great way to celebrate Halloween and the harvest at once. Especially if there are some hobgoblins hidden in there to give you a fright!

Halloween Costume Parties

Back in the old days, people would don masks and costumes to try to fool the evil spirits into thinking they were someone else. The tradition has continued – although more for fun than to fool ghosts – and now flourishes all across the globe. There are all sorts of things that you may decide to dress as and many costume parties will actually offer prizes for the most original or scary costume.

Bonfires

Bonfires are reminiscent of witches. Witches are some of the supposedly ‘evil’ creatures that come out on Halloween night. In traditional lore, witches keep a cauldron of foul smelling potions of some sort over a constantly burning fire. In reality, real live women were burned at the stake for being accused of being witches.

Trick or Treating

Trick or treating originated in Ireland. Back then, people went from door to door asking for donations of food that would be shared by all at the All Hallow’s Eve feast. Now, costumed kids go from door to door asking for candy.
